Disasters are a very common phenomenon. Each day, in some parts of the world, disasters takes place. Among them most are Natural Disasters. Other disasters either takes place accidentally or are done intentionally, which we call as human induced disasters. But, whatever, may be the cause, the result is broken houses, orphans and people losing their near and dear ones. The scenes are very pathetic and heart-rending. Life seems hollow for the survivors. They become living deads. Facing such trauma is really unbearable. Yet, life has to go on. After every destruction, there is again a new creation. We need to move on. But how to overcome those stressful and horrible memories. These are above human planning, policies or Government guidelines. The situation demands for something else, which neither you nor I can define. Yet, when we go back to our history, we find that there is a magical sound, which when chanted, brings peace to ones heart. Chanting that magical word makes us forget everything and become one with the almighty.

Lets now talk about that magical sound 'AUM' and its symbol:

Upanisad, a very old literature explains the significance of 'OM'. According to Mandukya Upanisad, there are three matras in the world 'AUM' from which 'OM' came. 'a' as the 'u' in 'but'; 'u' as the 'u' in 'put' and the 'm' in 'balm'. The term matras is used for the upper limb of Nagari Characters and a syllabic instant in prosody.

The 'a' stands for the first stage of wakefulness, where we experience in our gross body the totality of external experiences through our mind and sense organ. The 'u' stands for dream state of sleep, in which mental experiences are available, by the mind, which is the only thing which is awake, without the help of external sense organs or the presence of rationalising intellect. The sound 'm' represents the deep sleep state. A short silence is inevitable between two successive 'AUM's. On this silence is superimposed the idea of fourth state, known as turiya. This is the state of perfect bliss, when the individual self recognizes its identity with the SUPREME.

The sound of 'AUM' is also called 'Pranava', meaning it is something that pervades life or in simple words runs through prana or breath. In every music there are three aspects, namely:
1) the meaning of the song  2) the laws of music  3) the sound of the song.

Similarly in 'AUM' there are three aspects. The first is the mere sound, the mere mantra as pronounced by the mouth; the second is the meaning of the syllable, which is to be realized through feeling and the third is the aplication of 'AUM' to your character, singing it through your acts and so through your life.

AUM represents the SELF. The SELF is in four states, namely the waking state, the dream state, the deep-sleep state and at the last turiya. All the states are represented in the sound of AUM. and the silence that follows and surrounds the syllable. To every mantra 'AUM' , the pranava is added on. And without 'AUM' no sacred chant has its power.

Nows lets discuss, how can destress oneself and forget a traumatic situation with the help of 'AUM'

Chant resoundingly, chant softly. This chant is uplifting, it messages the body and mind with soothing harmonic vibration. It harmonizes the breath. Its a chant to please the SELF. Chanting 'AUM' is mind cleanising. It drives chaotic thoughts from our mind. Depression and Stress are melted away. A smile arises on the face and joy arises in the heart.

Why not give a try. When you wake up early in the morning, then sit in a cool and silent place and chant the magical sound 'AUM'. See the difference. Its helps a lot in psyhcological support. It helps in disaster management.
